In a bold move to transform grassroots sports into a tool for youth empowerment and social change, the Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Akinola Idowu, has announced a massive boxing initiative designed to discover the next generation of international champions.
The initiative, tagged “Fight for Asiwaju,” is more than just a sporting event; it is a calculated effort to “empower destinies” and add tangible value to the lives of the local populace.
A Vision of Value and Empowerment
Speaking on his motivation, Hon. Idowu emphasized that leadership is a matter of the heart and a commitment to the people.
”Motivation is something of the mind; it is a vision. I have been indebted to my people to never disappoint them,” the Chairman stated. “I see the sporting arena as an investment in people. We want to engage our best boxers, partner with them, and help them achieve greatness so the government can support them from the very point we find them.”
The Chairman also linked the initiative to a broader civic strategy, noting that political support is earned through service. By adding value to the lives of the youth today, he believes the community will “vote happily” when called upon, recognizing the administration’s genuine efforts to improve their quality of life.
Building a Legacy: The Orile-Agege Boxing Ring
To ensure the sustainability of this vision, the Chairman of the Sport Committee, Oladipo Liadi, revealed that the LCDA is making a significant investment in infrastructure. For the first time, Orile-Agege will be purchasing its own professional boxing ring to be accessible to all local talents.
”If you know Orile-Agege well, after football comes boxing,” Liadi remarked. “We want to ensure that if Lagos State takes ten people to a national or international competition, at least four or five of them come from Orile-Agege. Mark my words, in two to three years, you will see this manifest.”
Unity Among Stakeholders
The championship is built on a foundation of professional collaboration. The committee has successfully unified over 20 boxing clubs and coaches within the LCDA, ensuring that the event is run by experts.
Key highlights of the technical rollout include:
- Expert Coaching: The involvement of veteran coaches with over 30 years of experience.
- Inclusive Planning: Direct partnership with the Head of the Orile-Agege Boxing Association and the Coaches Association.
- Talent Depth: With over 20 boxing gyms ready to participate, the committee is prepared to manage over 100 high-caliber boxers.
By providing jerseys, equipment, and a platform for competition, Orile-Agege is shifting from “business as usual” to a structured “business of sports” that prioritizes the welfare of the athlete.
As the “Fight for Asiwaju” championship kicks off, the eyes of the community, the State, and the Federal Government are now on Orile-Agege to see the rise of the next global boxing icons.
