A former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Barrister Aina Akinpelu, has officially declared his bid to contest the Ogun West Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
Akinpelu, a legal practitioner, made his intentions known during a media parley with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel. He promised to deliver “effective representation, quality lawmaking, and a continuity of developmental strides” for the district.
The ‘Sacred’ Senate and the Competence Factor
Addressing the media, Akinpelu described the Nigerian Senate as a “sacred institution” that demands vibrant and articulate leadership. He emphasized that the upper legislative chamber is not a place for benchwarmers, but for individuals with a deep-seated understanding of governance.
“Lawmaking comes naturally to me,” Akinpelu stated. “The primary duty of the Senate is to enact laws that promote good governance, and I am well prepared to contribute meaningfully in that regard.”
Sustaining the ‘Yayi’ Legacy
The aspirant paid tribute to past and present representatives of the district, specifically praising the incumbent, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi). Akinpelu acknowledged that Adeola’s performance has set a high bar for any successor.
”It will be difficult for anyone to match his achievements, but whoever emerges must be ready to continue the good work for the benefit of our people,” he remarked, noting that his mission is to build upon the existing developmental foundation.
Legislative Pedigree
Akinpelu pointed to his eight-year tenure in the Ogun State House of Assembly (2011–2019) as evidence of his readiness. During his time in the state legislature, he held several key positions, including:
- Chairman: House Committee on Health (6+ years).
- Chairman: Committee on Information, Culture, and Strategy.
- Vice Chairman: Committees on Agriculture and Commerce.
Vision for Reform
On the national level, the aspirant identified a gap between the volume of Nigerian laws and their effective enforcement. He advocated for more “targeted and responsive” legislation to address:
- Social Stability: Laws that protect cultural values and reflect citizens’ realities.
- Institutional Support: Clearer legal frameworks to enhance the effectiveness of the media and law enforcement agencies.
- Public Welfare: Sponsoring bills aimed at improving living standards and protecting lives within Ogun West.
As the 2027 political season begins to take shape, the race for the Ogun West seat is expected to be highly competitive, with stakeholders increasingly calling for experienced, result-oriented representation to lead the district forward.
