The Lagos State Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District 1, Dr. Olufunke Idowu Oyetola, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, alumni, and community stakeholders in building a conducive learning environment for students.
Speaking at the commissioning of newly renovated facilities donated by the Stadium Grammar School Old Students Association in Lagos on Tuesday, Dr. Oyetola—represented by Mrs. Maria Ojo, Director of School Administration, Education District 1—commended the alumni for complementing government efforts through the provision of dual seats, a modern laboratory, and ICT rooms.
She stressed the need for proper maintenance of the facilities, noting that the district enforces a policy requiring students and staff to replace damaged items. She also acknowledged the alumni’s request for the school’s restoration to senior secondary status, citing their commitment to improving the learning environment.
Alumni’s Commitment to Community Development
National Coordinator of the Alumni Association, Mr. Olowe Oluwatayo, highlighted the group’s resolve to support government initiatives in education. He explained that since 2017, the alumni have mobilized resources to rehabilitate roofs, classrooms, toilets, railings, and the school hall, while also providing water and ICT infrastructure.
Olowe stressed that educational development should not be left solely to government, urging individuals and organizations to contribute to community growth. He noted that alumni members abroad also donated to the project, underscoring the role of collective responsibility in nation-building.
“We all need to come together—teachers, students, principals, alumni, and community leaders—to develop our schools. Government alone cannot do it,” he said, adding that sustainability requires students to complete their senior secondary education at the school so they can join the alumni network and continue the culture of giving back.
Commendations and Counsel
Former principal, Mrs. Salako Arinola, praised the alumni for their consistent support and urged students to preserve the facilities for future generations. Similarly, Comrade Bisola Adeagbo, the Alumni Public Relations Officer, shared her experiences as a student and expressed joy at the transformation of the school. She encouraged current students to uphold the values of responsibility and community service.
