Ahead of the 2027 election, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Agege Constituency I in the Lagos Assembly, Oluwagbenga Abiola, has urged party to throw out a petition by his contender, Kola Egunjobi for lack of merit and violation of due process.
He said Egunjobi’s petition was a desperate and meritless attempt to mislead party leaders and distort the facts surrounding the recently concluded primary election of the party.
Abiola, in a statement on Friday, maintained that the claims contained in the petition by Egunjobi “are fictional, false, inaccurate, misleading, unsubstantiated, and amount to nothing more than the rantings of a sponsored political loser unwilling to accept the outcome of the party’s internal processes.
“The so-called petition lacks compliance with basic institutional due process and fails to satisfy the minimum requirements expected of any serious complaint brought before the party,” he said.
Egunjobi, a former council chairman, had claimed that he won the primary election.
However, Abiola, popularly called Agbelebu, argued that the petition violated the party’s nomination guidelines governing House of Assembly primary elections and is equally inconsistent with relevant provisions of the APC Constitution and the Electoral Act.
“The petition does not meet the threshold of a complaint deserving of consideration by any serious institution. It lacks substance, lacks merit, and should be thrown out in its entirety,” Abiola stated.
He maintained that the APC remains a party founded on rules, due process, and internal democracy, and therefore should not be allowed to be distracted by petitions that fail to comply with established procedures and legal requirements.
Abiola expressed confidence that the National Working Committee would carefully examine the issues around the primary election before arriving at a decision guided by the party’s constitution, its guidelines, and principles of fairness and justice.
“This stunt will never work. Truth has prevailed, and no amount of misinformation or propaganda can change that fact,” he said.
