NCC Promotes Sustainable Financing and Fair Taxation at 18th Abuja International Trade Fair

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) marked its annual “NCC Special Day” at the 18th Abuja International Trade Fair, organized by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), held at the Abuja Trade & Convention Centre, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Way, Airport Road, Abuja. The event provided a platform for the NCC to engage with telecom consumers, enlighten them about their rights, and promote various consumer-centric initiatives.
The theme of this year’s trade fair, ‘Sustainable Financing and Taxation,’ highlighted the critical role of the telecommunications industry in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and improving the quality of life for citizens. As the regulator of the sector in Nigeria, the NCC emphasized its commitment to ensuring the sustainability and vitality of the telecommunications industry.
Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice-Chairman/CEO of the NCC, addressed attendees, acknowledging the importance of telecommunications in the digital economy agenda. He stressed that the telecommunications sector has been a key driver of economic growth, connecting businesses, strengthening industries, and enabling governments to provide essential services efficiently.
Danbatta highlighted the need for sustainable financing in the telecom industry to support the growth of robust telecommunications networks. He also discussed the importance of fair taxation practices, ensuring that tax policies do not hinder innovation or burden consumers. The NCC is actively engaging with both federal and state governments to harmonize taxation in the telecommunications sector.
The NCC’s regulatory efforts aim to deepen access to digital services, fostering competitiveness in Nigeria’s economy. With over 220 million active mobile subscriptions and 159 million active Internet subscribers as of August 2023, the growth of the telecom sector has been remarkable. Danbatta emphasized the need for robust telecom infrastructure to transition industries into being ICT-driven, enhancing Nigeria’s digital competitiveness on the global stage.
The NCC continues to create a conducive environment for the deployment of telecom infrastructure, ensuring quality of service and consumer protection. They are also driving initiatives for the deployment of Fifth Generation (5G) networks, aiming to bring higher connection speeds, mobility, and low-latency capabilities to communications services in Nigeria.
At the event, attendees were encouraged to engage with the NCC, ask questions, and seek information about telecom services. The NCC’s commitment to driving digital transformation in Nigeria remains strong, with sustainable financing and fair taxation practices playing a pivotal role in ensuring the resilience of the telecommunications sector.
