Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed the president’s attendance following a series of briefings at the State House in Abuja. In both 2024 and 2025, Tinubu delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead the Nigerian delegation while he remained at home to manage urgent domestic crises, including severe regional flooding.
The centerpiece of President Tinubu’s upcoming address will be showcasing his administration’s economic and governance reform agenda to the international community. Scheduled to speak at approximately 10:45 a.m. New York time (3:45 p.m. Nigerian time), the president’s speech has been timed specifically so that citizens back home can watch the address live. Alongside his main address, the president will participate in streamlined, high-level side events focusing on critical sectors like power and energy, education, and hospital management.
Sub-regional security will also feature heavily in the president’s diplomatic push, particularly regarding West Africa’s porous borders. Ambassador Ibrahim disclosed that Tinubu has issued specific directives to work closely with the United Nations to design and implement a robust regional border policing framework. Nigeria plans to advocate for West Africa to serve as an international case study for border security, aiming to secure UN resources and peacekeeping cooperation to combat terrorism and cross-border crime.
Adding a layer of high-stakes political intrigue, the summit may facilitate a prominent encounter between President Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump. Though officials have stopped short of announcing a formal bilateral meeting, seating plans reveal that Tinubu will be positioned on the front row of the General Assembly hall, just a few seats away from the American leader. This close diplomatic proximity is expected to foster a natural opportunity for the two leaders to interact, potentially marking their first face-to-face meeting since Trump’s return to office.
